U.S. Representative Massie Sends Letter to House Leadership Opposing Internet Sales Tax
“For the first time in history, with this bill, Congress would grant states jurisdiction beyond their physical borders”
Congressman Massie, along with 15 other members of Congress from both parties, sent a letter to House leadership opposing H.R. 684, the Marketplace Fairness Act, otherwise known as the Internet Sales Tax. Read the full text of the letter with signatures here.
“I’m a strong proponent of the tenth amendment. But this bill does not protect state’s rights,” said Rep. Massie. “In fact, this bill changes the very fabric of the United States of America by subjecting people and businesses in one state to taxes and regulations of another state. This is unprecedented.”
In the letter, Massie highlights the negative economic and regulatory effects of the bill, and urges House leaders not to take the bill up in any of its iterations. The letter follows last month’s action on the house floor, where Reps. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Steve Daines (R-MT) joined Representative Massie to deliver a special order speech opposing the Internet tax bill.

If this bill passes, we’ll have a virtual United States of America, where borders no longer mean anything. Justice Marshall said that the power to tax is the power to destroy. And as recent revelations of wrongdoing at the IRS demonstrate, the power to tax is the power to harass.”
