Congressman Massie signed on as an original co-sponsor of legislation to return the historic Delta Queen steamboat to Cincinnati. The Delta Queen began operations in 1926 and was locally owned from 1946 to 1985.
U.S. Representative Massie Calls for Return of the “The steamboat’s homecoming would bring millions of dollars and dozens of jobs to the local economy.” Congressman Massie signed on as an original co-sponsor of legislation to return the historic Delta Queen steamboat to Cincinnati. The Delta Queen began operations in 1926 and was locally owned from 1946 to 1985. “The historic Delta Queen belongs in the Port of Cincinnati,” said Rep. Massie. “The steamboat’s homecoming would bring millions of dollars and dozens of jobs to the local economy.” For the past four decades, the Delta Queen has operated under exemption from the 1966 Safety at Sea Law, which prohibits boats with a wooden superstructure from carrying more than 50 passengers on overnight cruises on American waterways. Though Congress has renewed the exemption nine times, the most recent exemption expired in 2008. If passed, this bill would allow the Delta Queen to continue overnight cruise operations in the Cincinnati area. Representative Steve Chabot (R-OH) introduced the legislation with Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY), Brad Wenstrup (R-OH), and Lacy Clay (D-MO). |
